Some Glad Morning: A Novel With A Soul.

By Moira Curling

Discovering a terrific novel before it becomes a bestseller is like striking gold. It's what keeps me going. I'm always thrilled to recommend a good book. By now, I'm sure you know I'm rather particular about what I read and even more particular about the books I recommend.

I'm thrilled to recommend the novel Some Glad Morning by Gary C. Horton. Without a doubt it is the best novel I have read this year, perhaps the best I have read in many years. It's about a young man fighting overwhelming odds for love. But it's more than a love story. It will melt your heart, touch you in so many ways and leave you wishing and hoping and thinking.

Some of the many things you will find endearing about Some Glad Morning are the characters. Some are quirky, to say the least, some are inspiring and some will take your breath away. It is as if somehow Mr. Horton has made the familiar magical. You'll want to tell others about this book.

The main character is Ransom, the son of a share cropper in South Carolina. He volunteers for the Army in order to earn cash for his impoverished family. But, it's 1918 and he's immediately sent to the trenches to fight in the First World War. An assault across no man's land fails miserably and Ransom is stranded in a shell hole with a dying lieutenant.

The officer has with him letters from his fiance, a Charleston lady named Elizabeth. The officer's dying wish is to hear her letters read to him. In the most heart wrenching scene I have ever known, Ransom reads to the young man as he dies. Later, trapped for days alone in no man's land, Ransom finds comfort in reading the letters and falls in love with Elizabeth.

Ransom returns from the war a changed man and pursues Elizabeth with all his soul. But, he is poor and she is the daughter of a wealthy planter. To make matters worse, Ransom must content with a devilish competing suitor, relentless racism, overwhelming poverty , entrenched stupidity and, at times, his own arrogance.

But Ransom endures and with the help of a crotchety hermit and the steadfast courage of a young pregnant woman on the run, Ransom is made stronger by his trials. He comes to understand his heart and finds the courage to love deeply.

Like so much of Some Glad Morning, the ending resonates with such depth you will not easily forget it. When you read Some Glad Morning, you'll think to yourself time after time, 'This would make a wonderful film.' I have no doubt it will be made into a movie. It's already been made into an audio book.
