Important Facts On Getting Married In NY

By Marla Mills

Marriage is an important step for anyone and there are many things that revolve around this process. Before you can get married, there are always a set of requirements that one needs to meet in almost all societies. The same is not different when you are getting married in NY City. For starters, it is important to understand that you must be of legal age to even start planning for a marriage ceremony.

The event involves many things besides the consent of two adults. To make sure there are no hidden issues regarding your union, the city has laws that everyone must follow before you can get married. There is the license that you will get from the town or city clerk within the state.

Among the measures in place include the requirement of consents if any or both of the couple that intends to marry are 14 years of age. No licenses can be given for anyone under the age of 14. For the 14 year old couple, there has to be an order from the court and getting this order also demands for certain things. The court will have to screen the couple thoroughly.

After applying and signing for the document, there is a waiting period during which the applicants will wait before the license takes effect. The couple cannot decide to go ahead with the ceremony within the first 24 hours after the license is issued. If this happens, the union will be null and void. It is important to make sure you only commence any ceremony after the 24 hour waiting period.

The license also has a validity period. You cannot just get licensed and keep it for years waiting to get married when you feel like it. Instead, all applicants who get the approval of the town or city clerk have to make good their intention after 24 hours but within six months after the date of issue.

Any marriages after the six months validity period cannot be conducted on the basis of the same license. This means if your event takes more than six months to organize, you will have to make a new application for licensing. The application fees will still apply just as it did in the first case.

It is also good to note that there is a fee that you have to pay for the license. At the moment, this fee is $40. This money is payable at the clerk during the application for the document. The clerk will not issue a license without the payment of these fees. It is thus advisable to make sure you bring the money along when going to the clerk.

The lowest age limit for getting married in NY is 14 years. It is however important to point out that there will be a need to produce consents for any couple that is between the ages of 14 and 16. The younger couple of 14 years will need to have the consent from a judge of the high court. Those at the age of 16 must have written consent from both parents.
