How Can I Take Charge Of My Spiritual Life Journey

By Kristen Baird

Physical and spiritual lives are comparable to a large extent. Their similarity lies in the desire to make every bit better and more fulfilling. When you have gone astray, changing the path of your destiny is as challenging as going to the gym to keep fit or changing your lifestyle by quitting smoking, among other traits. How then do I take control of my spiritual life journey?

Becoming something more and deeper is a struggle by all means. External changes are easier to make since they involve physical adjustments. Some of the physical changes to institute include going to the gym, taking pills, avoiding certain people and areas, etc. However, matters of the spirit are different because they demand personal resolution.

The choice to alter the direction of your life will bring you to your desired destiny. This change can only be manifested in behavior since it is a matter of the spirit. When the desire to change exists and a decision has been made, then your inner person begins to yearn for an authentic, pure and deeper meaning. This is the way to take charge of your journey.

There is a voice that speaks within and gives you directions. The voice is usually about the right things to do and what to avoid. In order to arrive at your destiny or to find your authentic personality, listen to this voice. This voice governs your thoughts and actions and will lead to conflict if it is ignored.

Remaining in touch with your genuine self leads you to the path of self fulfillment. Discernment has been identified as the best way to achieve this. This happens when you find time to be alone and evaluate your actions. The evaluation reveals the wayward ways that lead to conflicts in order to control them.

Discernment offers a chance to answer several fundamental questions. Among them is, What if I am Kinder? More compassionate? More patient? Less selfish? More loving? More humble? More generous? Etc. When you have found an answer to these questions, then, your heart is ready for change.

Expert are still struggling to understand if change can be achieved though exclusive individual effort. They are of the opinion that external intervention is necessary. An example is a house whose renovation requires new furniture and installations. The external force required is your religious commitment. It will offer direction to your life.

Spiritual formation is a universal characteristic of human beings. It determines your attitudes, values and moral standing. It is through neglect that the inner being weakens leading to deviation. In order to restore this, you must undergo a spirit-led process that brings you as close as possible to the likeness of Christ. The bible says that we must endeavor to be like Christ.

The irony of change is that you cannot complete it on your own and neither can it happen without your active participation. The first step is to desire and make a decision to change. When this happens, you gain clarity of purpose and your destiny can be achieved. Restoration begins to happen.
