By Ben Kingsley

Kentucky marriage license records are open documents that the residents of the state have the freedom to access. Such document, along with other documents was opened to the public after the Freedom of Information Act of the nation has been passed.

There are several reasons why the residents of Kentucky would request for a copy of their marriage records. When conducting a genealogy research, one of the documents that are being checked for information is the marriage records. It has information that is vital in updating the family history. The document is also one of the important documents necessary when dealing with some transactions in the government. Transactions that involve the finances as well as the dependents of the couple would most likely call for such document. Checking on the marital status of an individual is also one of the reasons why some would request for a copy of such file. This is done by people who are currently in a relationship and would like to make sure that the one they are dating is not married yet.

Details about the marriage of a couple are what the document focuses on. One would know the complete names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and the place where the couple got married. The document would also show some personal details of the bride and the groom such as the birth details, residence address and occupation at the time of the marriage. Additional information that can be found on the file includes the names of the witnesses and the parents of the couple.

In Kentucky, requesting for a copy of a marriage certificate has to be done at the county where the marriage took place. Although the Vital Records Section manages and archives the marriage records of the state, the said office is not allowed to release a copy of such file. The office can only verify the information as to where the document can be obtained and this verification cost only $6. When the request is made at the county where the marriage has been registered, another processing fee has to be paid. The processing fee is not the same for all the counties of the state.

Only marriages that were registered from June 1958 can be obtained from the state of Kentucky. In order to get a copy of the said file, one has fill out a request form with the basic details of the file that is being obtained. It is also important that the one who filed the request provide their contact details on the application form with their reason they are requesting it. Only the couple as well as their immediate family is given access to the file. One can also send a mail request but this may take days before the results of the search can be obtained.

The Internet now allows retrieval of a marriage and divorce records. This makes the search faster and convenient since the search can be done even without going to any office. Some websites now offer to let their users test their system for free.
