By Marissa Velazquez

Most shoppers like to find items they want at bargain prices. All the thrift stores hanover pa has to offer are kept busy. There are many, each supporting a different charitable organization. Shoppers find low prices on clothing, toys and books. Decorations that make a home attractive are available in all colors and styles.

Stroll up and down aisles with furniture on one side and bicycles on the other. Often shoppers find items that they have never seen before. It is entertaining to guess what an unknown item might be used for. In most cases, a shopper makes purchases that are different from what he or she came in for.

Items may be grouped with furniture in one part of the store and clothing in another. Wooden furniture is sold at a fraction of the cost of new. The amateur refinisher can learn to turn a table or dresser into a beautiful piece.

There may be an aisle devoted to lamps and small household appliances. There is usually an electric extension cord provided for customers. They can plug in the lamps and other electric appliances to make sure they work before buying them.

The clothing items may or may not have labels indicating the size. Fortunately, most thrift stores will have a dressing room to try them on. Sometimes the clothes will be new and have tags on them. Retail stores that go out of business sometimes donate the remaining stock when they close their doors.

The people who shop at the second-hand stores know the money will go to help others. Donations are given for the same reason. These stores make money because all the merchandise sold there is donated and no investment is needed to keep the shelves stocked. Many of the clerks and cashiers work there without pay.

They enjoy setting up eye-pleasing displays that make shopping there a pleasant experience. Holiday displays are especially appealing. Imagine buying all the plastic pumpkins and costumes for a family with three children. It could be cost-prohibitive in the retail shopping venues.

Baskets are sold for low prices. Partially used packages of greeting cards can be found along with some new merchandise that may be suitable for giving as gifts. Shoppers never know what they will find.

The clerks, many of whom donate their time, will take small items such as jewelry out of the display cases for customers to examine more closely. Pretty items such as vases and porcelain dolls may be displayed on shelves behind the counters.

A family furnishing a summer lake cottage or a student filling his or her first apartment will find dishes, silverware and other kitchen necessities. One or two pieces are usually missing from the sets. Find sheets and blankets, sleeping bags and towels at low prices. Find fishing poles and other equipment too.

When a shopper checks out and pays for the merchandise, it is bagged and the delicate items are carefully wrapped. The clerks and cashiers are very friendly. Usually they will thank each shopper for making a purchase and supporting whatever charity the thrift stores hanover pa and other locations support.
