New York Marriage License

By Ben Kingsley

The Freedom of Information Act has been implemented in the state of New York. This means that the local residents of the state can access their personal files anytime it is needed. One of the documents available is the state of New York marriage records.

Marriage records in New York are being used by people who conduct research on the family history, also called genealogy. The information that can be found in a marriage certificate is important in updating the family tree. Genealogy can help track the whereabouts and updates of relatives. Marriage certificates are also required when processing some government requests. Most of these requests would involve the couple such as insurance and property declaration. There are also some people who would request for a copy of a marriage certificate of another individual to check their marital status. This is mostly done by singles that are in the dating phase and would like to verify the status of their soon-to-be lifetime partners.

As the name suggests, a marriage record would have information about the marriage of a couple. The names of the bride and the groom are indicated on the file along with their personal details such as the date and place of birth. The names of their parents are also indicated on the record. The certificate highlights the place and the date where the marriage occurred. One would also know who served as witness to the event.

The Department of Health in New York is responsible for managing the public records of the state and this includes the marriage certificates. The licenses of the counties, Buffalo, Albany and Yonkers cannot be obtained at the said office. One can only request it at the county clerk office of each county. Records of other counties can also be requested at their local county clerk office to avoid the hassle of going to the state office.

The state can release a copy of the document if it was registered since 1880 up to the present. A $30 processing fee has to be paid in order to process the request in the state office. Requests made at the local county may have a different service fee. Genealogy copies of the document can be requested after 50 years since the marriage took place. One should know that the document is only released when the one who filed the request is either the bride or the groom and their immediate family. Doing the search in the county is faster than requesting it at the state office. A mail request can also be sent to the state office but it may take longer than usual. The long wait time can be avoided by doing the search online.

By searching for New York marriage records through the Internet, there is no need to wait for days nor is there a need to go to any office since the request is available even at the comforts of your own home and the results are obtained in just seconds. With this, one can save a great amount of time and energy.
