Help Needed For The Zimbabwe Mission

By Katrina Wheeler

The Zimbabwe mission is in dire need of help. The country is located just above Africa and just below Zambia. The country is in severe trouble. With the economy all but collapsed, most of its citizens live in extreme poverty. There are extreme food shortages.

The Zimbabwe Mission project is trying to help those in need. Their focus is especially on the many orphans. They built and operate the Heather Chimhoga Orphan Care Center. They try to provide at least two nutritious meals per day for up to a thousand orphans and preschoolers.

In addition to nutritional needs, a large portion of these particular children have either AIDS or other serious illnesses. A full-time nurse is now available to provide for many of their medical requirements. Generous donations of both medical help and medicines have helped to significantly reduce their child mortality rate. However, they can use even more help from others.

With tighter restraints on both the economy and policy problems, it is becoming more difficult to get the items that have been donated for their use. They are trying to grow more food locally in an on-site garden. They have had some success in growing moringa trees which are high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, protein, calcium, and vitamin A.

Each child must pay a required school fee. They are doing their best to make sure that this fee is paid for each child. A co-op is operated that makes the schools uniforms that the children must wear. They also work to supply school supplies, and to do renovations on buildings like the schools and libraries. They are drilling new wells to make sure clean, fresh water is always available. They are also teaching many local citizens trades for projects to produce personal income.

As with any country suffering severe poverty, they are having a hard time getting enough funds for the things they need. Even though they have several churches that provide them with much needed food and supplies, it is sometimes quite difficult to get the items to them. They are hindered in their ability to buy and ship much needed food like beans and rice.

Some schools are also donating old computers and old school furniture to them. They also sponsor many food and clothing drives. Some focus on gathering much needed personal hygiene items. However, they need even more items.

Even with many people giving generously to the Zimbabwe Mission, difficulties still occur. The donated items must be shipped to them. Some of the crates used to ship the items by sea are quite expensive. They can cost at least 10 thousand dollars each. Too often, donated items are in storage crates, because the funds are not readily available to ship them. Many caregivers give lovingly of their time to give to them. They need the help of all of us. We should be willing to give to those who are less fortunate than us.
