The History Of Joshua As Told In The Bible

By Debra Cooley

The Old Testament of the Bible tells the history of Joshua as the head of the Israelites. He was borne in Egypt and his father was called Nun. At the time, Moses was leading the Israelites.

After his birth, something strange happened which depicted him as a true man of God. Moses changed his name from Hosea to Joshua which means the Lord is Salvation. Among the Jews of that generation, only Caleb and him had a strong belief in God. They are the only ones who believed that God would rescuer them from the hands of the Egyptians and take them to the Promised Land.

In order to punish the Jews who did not have believe in the Lord, the Jews of that generation were sent to the wilderness by God for forty years. The life in the wilderness was harsh and frustrating. At some point, the other Israelites started blaming Mosses for having taken them out from Egypt to the wilderness were they were suffering. Due to the harsh conditions which prevailed in the wilderness, all the other people who did not believe in God died. Only Caleb and him remained alive.

Thereafter Moses did and Joshua took over the leadership of the Israelites. One of the reasons why he was chosen is because of his true faithfulness to God. He led the Jews for twenty eight years until they reached the Promised Land. He was able to conquer Jericho and also to fight several battles with the help of God. Before conquering Jericho, God had sent him to Jericho in company of Caleb.

The soldiers were to go through river Jordan which was flooded at that time. He instructed the priests and the Leviticus to put the Ark of the Covenant in water and then the water stopped flowing. This enabled the soldiers to cross and to proceed with their fight.

When they went to Jericho, a prostitute by the name Rehab sheltered them and also helped them to escape before they could be killed. They promised to rescue Rehab and to protect her together with her family before invading Jericho. This was because of the help Rehab extended to them.

RoundsThis is because she housed Joshua and Caleb and helped them to come out from Jericho. This then allowed the Jews to occupy the city. Also in regard to the battle of Gibeon, he performed a miracle of making the sun to stand until after the battle was completed.

On the seventh day before invading, the soldiers then went round seven rounds. After the seventh day, they shouted and the wall came down allowing the soldier to invade the city. The soldiers then killed everybody in the city except Rehab and his family as Joshua had promised her. This is the history of Joshua as given in the bible.
