The public schooling system in most countries is managed by the state. The state determines the curriculum and the policies according to which schools are managed. One contentious issue is that religious instruction in any form has been largely forbidden. In some schools even praying is not allowed. Many parents resent this. Parents place their children in religious schools for a variety of reasons. In most instances parents are of the opinion that schools should teach young learners morals and ethics and not only secular subjects. Many parents are religious and they feel that religion should be an integral part of the education that their children receive. Schools that base their management principle upon religious beliefs are as old as the world itself. In fact, until only a few decades ago, in many countries the only education offered to youngsters was the schools found by missionaries. Satisfied parents agree that religious schools offer numerous benefits. Learners are disciplined and they are required to behave well and to follow the principles that form part of their faith. These schools also have very strict standards for their teachers. Teachers are required to also subscribe to the religious norms of the school. Teachers generally vie for posts at these schools.

These schools most certainly have their detractors. Critics complain that most of these schools are not within the financial reach of ordinary citizens. They also say that the schools are too exclusive and that they force their students to adhere to a rigid religious belief system. They believe that this is wrong and that learners should be exposed to different ideas and philosophies before they can be expected to make personal decisions.

When parents consider enrolling their child in a religious school they should make very sure that they are agree with and subscribe to the philosophy underlying the school policies. It may also be a good idea to ask the opinion of the child. Parents should make sure that the school offers a full curriculum and that adequate provision is made for academic subjects.

Parents must be careful not to be lulled into a false sense of security and comfort. The fact that their youngsters are students at a good school does not mean that they do not also have responsibilities. Parents remain the main educators of their offspring. They must be actively involved in the school and they must make sure that their child leads a balanced life.

There can be little doubt that many religious schools offer parents the option to make sure that their children receive an education that is based upon the faith that they deem to be the center of their lives. Most of these schools offer a high standard of education and they produce excellent results. Care should be taken, however, not to force youngsters into a system that is untenable to them.
