New York Free Public Divorce Records

By Ben Kingsley

A record of divorce in New York, whether it is a decree or a certificate, is a legal document. Such register can be advantageous in many ways. One of which is when you are perusing the background of a certain individual you wish to establish rapport with, or when you are doing a self background check in case you want to get married again. Either way, divorce records will bring light to significant information that you may need to know and will indicate any contents that need to be reviewed for accuracy and completeness.

The central repository for divorce records in New York is the Vital Statistics Office which is operated by the State's Department of Health. Divorce files can be through decrees or certificates. Divorces that transpired before the year 1963 are in the form of decrees only. Divorce certificates are not public information. Hence, only those authorized by law are allowed to obtain a copy of such information. Those who can get a copy of a divorce record in the state are the persons indicated on the document and those that they authorize to claim the record.

Each copy of a divorce record in New York, either certificate or decree, is worth $15. Payment should be through check or money order made payable to the New York State Department of Health. Such fee is non-refundable regardless if the divorce record requested is found or not. In case the divorce record is not located, the office will issue a "Certificate of Failure to Find".

When appealing for a copy of a divorce record in New York, a processing fee of $15 is required. Such fee is not refundable whatever the result of the search may be. In case no divorce record is found, the fee will not be returned back to you as it applies for the search itself. In this case, a "Certificate of Failure to Find" will be issued.

When requesting for the divorce decree or certificate, you have to provide the necessary information required for your request to be processed. Significant details needed are the complete names of the husband and the wife, date and county of the marriage, and the county where the divorce was filed and approved. As the one requesting the record, you must also provide your personal details such as your full name, address, and your contact number. You also have to indicate your relationship to the subjects and the reason for requesting the divorce records.

No matter what your reason may be for requesting such record, still the most practical and easy way of getting it is through the Internet. Placing the order online will hasten things up. Requests made online are processed very quickly and are delivered to you without delay. Plus, you own your time. You can search for divorce records free of charge any time of the day or night and expect for the results to be sent to you in no time.
