All over the world, almost every market is extremely active on networking websites. For this reason, marketing departments have begun to run campaigns through networking platforms. While their popularity has been increasing in popularity since their implementation, the future holds even greater things. In Africa Social network platforms are equally important, but they still have much room for development in the future.

Most of the online media users in Africa use smart phone apps to communicate digitally, but the world's most successful web-based applications are gaining popularity. Just over four million people in South Africa use networking sites, while smart phone applications currently generate three million active users.

The way audiences interact with their networks has much to do with the way marketers create their strategies. Savvy advertisers must know how much daily time their demographic spends online and what times the majority are active. The efficiency of various advertising methods vary, too, with profile page ads receiving more attention than those displayed on news feeds.

In the future, digital media marketing will no longer be an optional addition. Within the next year, it will become increasingly important for every business to integrate social media marketing into their campaigns. However, within the next two years, doing so will become a necessity if one's business is to maintain its share of the market.

Networking websites offer three distinct ways to generate publicity. As always, generating direct revenue is key, but it is not the only facet. Generating leads and referrals is crucial for businesses who want to exploit the full potential of such sites. The highest goal is a viral campaign, created by provoking shares among users.

Viral campaigns have become the Holy Grail of online marketing. Through this method, it becomes possible to attract millions of viewers almost instantaneously with little economic input and even less effort. However, virality is not an easy thing to achieve. Campaign managers now need to have their eyes on the memes, newsworthy stories, and current interests of their target market if they are to generate a true guerrilla campaign that generates the interest of the masses.

One of the most valuable tools of social media is that they offer algorithms and analytic methods. This allows marketers to research the kind of keywords, strategies, and posting techniques to use. Analytic tools allow entrepreneurs to assess their successes and failures by studying every element of their campaign. Real world marketing has never made it so simple to break down the success of campaigns according to each user's interaction, the tactics employed and the timing with which they are implemented.

Digital marketing has not nullified the importance of tried-and-true advertising principles. It is still important to establish brand strength, word of mouth advertising, and the exploitation of the most influential people in one's demographic. It remains necessary to begin a campaign through the definition of target markets.

In Africa social network marketing is growing at a massive rate. Many of the more obscure, underrated networks are gaining ground at lightning pace. Media usage expands to include professional networks, social feeds, mobile communications, and image sharing sites. This leaves every business with the potential to generate campaigns that span multiple platforms to attract multifaceted markets.
