Foundations For Youth Unemployment In South Africa

By Elaine Guthrie

Youth joblessness reflects the problems that these young people go through in life. The situation needs addressing as the lack of job is leading to problems such as crime. The faster the issues are addressed, the better the country will be. The factors below are the ones contributing to youth unemployment in South Africa.

The number one cause of unemployment is the education system. This system has led to increase in unskilled labor. The education system in the country is very low. The economy is growing faster and there is no enough training to match the rate at which these industries that need skilled labor are increasing.

Geographical location is another cause. Many people live far away from cities where there are high job openings. The reason for that is that renting a house in the city is very expensive. This means if someone got a job in the city, it will be hard to get to the job, as there is not cheap public means of transportation.

The other significant cause of poverty in South Africa is high poverty levels. Many youths have completed their studies but there is no job that is forth coming. After tarmacking for long, they give up, as they have no money to cater for rent, fare and other necessities. They start looking for any kind of job. What happen when they do this are they becoming rusty in the skills they were taught in school. Therefore, even if they got a job later, they will not perform as expected. You will find that most youth find employment when they are almost thirty years of age. Poverty has also made students drop out of school due to lack of school fees. This is common in large families.

The country has a vibrant mining sector and several under developed sectors. The reason for underdevelopment is due to lack of skilled workers to work in an industry. For example, the agricultural industry is a major employer. If people had the right mindset and training, they would work in this sector. However, since there are only a few, the many offer less quality of work than expected.

Social cultural issues such as drug abuse and prostitution are also to blame. In South Africa drug abuse and prostitution is rampant. The reason for this is that the older generation lacked jobs and engaged in the said vices to earn money. Therefore, the young people indulge in particular vices since everyone is doing it due to lack of jobs.

Unrealistic expectations among the youth have discouraged much form getting a job. This has in turn led to many youths quitting or not applying for jobs. For example, most college graduates believe that they should earn a high salary as they start working for a company. The truth of the matter is that companies offer a low starting wage. This has frustrated the youths, as they do not want to accept the low salary first

Joblessness is common in every country in the world especially among the youth. The negative effects of unemployment are vices such as crime, drug use, and prostitution among others. The country should move to solve the situation as there as the effects are already severe. Proper training, lowering the inflation rate and making education accessible to all will solve the lack of employment.
