A Good Samaritan's Guide To Helping Orphans

By Elaine Guthrie

There are many ways to make a difference in the world. One that continues to be both popular and rewarding is helping orphans. Unfortunately, there are a great number of children around the world who are living in orphanages or on the street and who desperately need assistance. If you want to offer that assistance, the process of deciding what form your donation will take and where it will go can be overwhelming. Here is what you need to know in order to narrow down your options and choose the group that you want to offer aid to.

The form your donation will take is an important consideration. You need to decide whether you prefer to give financial donations or whether you prefer your assistance to come in the form of food, clothing or other items. If all of these are possible ways in which you can donate, you can also narrow down your options in other ways as well.

It can also help to narrow down the search geographically. Perhaps you have visited a country on vacation and want to help the people who live there. You may also have a sentimental attachment to a particular country. For example, some individuals will want to donate to orphans living in Sonora Mexico because they may have traveled to the country on vacation. This can be a great starting point when you decide how you want to offer assistance.

If you decide that you want to donate money to a specific area, you may want to check and see if there are any established aid organizations working in that area. By finding out what they require it may also make it easier for you to figure out what you are going to offer and how to best help orphans. Just remember to check the background of any aid organizations that you choose to donate money to in order to make sure that they are reputable and that the majority of your donations will make their way to the groups you want to assist.

Although you may be considering only giving one form of assistance, you may find that as time progresses, your involvement may take the form of several types of assistance. For example, it is not uncommon for groups working with orphanages to send donations of items or money and then travel to the location where the donations are being used in order to complete aid projects such as renovating buildings or teaching basic skills.

Gathering items together does not need to be a massive task although it can be. For example, you may want to canvas local aid organizations or religious organizations in order to find out whether they can help you gather items together.

There are a few different options when it comes to delivering donations. If you have a large number of items that cannot be transported easily by individuals, you may need to ship them over as part of a bulk shipment. Smaller numbers of items can be transported by individuals. Depending on what you are sending, there may be special permissions that you need to get or even special licenses.

Don't be intimidated by the idea of delivering items yourself. It can be a very rewarding experience and many people have said that it has changed their life. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing the gratitude on the faces of the people you want to help. It may end up being an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
