Divorce is the solution chosen by many when their marriage is no longer working. In California, divorce cases filed each year is increasing which is why access to CA divorce records is made available to the public. Such document is one of the most requested file in California.

Divorce records are used in a number of ways in California. When dealing with transactions in the government, it is one of the documents required in when processing insurance related matters of the divorced couple. The divorce certificate is also needed when the divorcees would update their assets and properties. Genealogy is also another use of such document, however, it is the least document being checked compared to other public documents. Although, it is the least document used for genealogy, it can still create problems when the separation of a couple is not updated in a timely manner. Another use of such document is when a divorced individual applies for marriage again. Without the said document, marriage application may be denied.

As the name implies, the divorce record in the state of California would contain details about the separation of a couple. One would know the place and the date when the divorce was granted. The document would not be considered as valid without the names of the involved individuals. There are limitations as to what the public can see. Information such as the reason why the couple opted for divorce is not visible to the public. This also includes the child custody and the division of the couple's assets and properties.

Since the document contains sensitive information that may affect the well being of an individual, access to it is strictly limited to the divorcees and their immediate family. Those who need to gain access to the said file should have a special court order to have the request granted. It is also important that one has the basic details of the record being requested and the contact details of the one who requested it. This can help simplify the retrieval process.

One cannot get a certified copy at the office of the Vital Statistics office. Certified copies can only be released at the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where it was filed. Processing fee would differ per county. The state office can help provide information as to where to obtain a copy of a divorce certificate. It would cost $13 to identify the county where the divorce was registered. This is only applicable for records registered between 1962 and 1984 only. Request can also be sent via mail to the county of registration. The requirements and the payment should then be included in the request. Payments can be in the form of a money order or check. It can take several days or two weeks before the result of the search can be sent back.

The Internet has now allowed the retrieval of a divorce certificate electronically. There are several websites now that offer to get copies of the public documents. One can even do a free divorce records search if you know where to look. Most websites offer their service for a reasonable fee which many prefer because of accuracy and completeness.
