In the United States, a psychologist or psychiatrist can become certified after completing a series of continuing education courses and acquiring a license specific to the area. Whereas, these individuals can treat a mental illness in which sexual dysfunction is a side effect without such a license.

While sexual surrogacy is a new field of treatment, there are some individuals and couples who love this approach. For, in sexual surrogacy, the surrogate works with people at home to develop new and improved sexual skills. As might be expected, sexual surrogacy has been somewhat controversial since the first sexual surrogate began practice some time ago.

Sexual surrogacy and sex therapy are two different and distinct practices. In sex therapy sessions are focused on specific symptoms rather than on underlying conflicts and complications related to a marriage or sexual relationship. In addition, sex therapy can be provided to any adult of legal age as long as the individual is competent in the act of sexual behavior. While not a licensed psychologist, these individuals can also discuss and treat emotional issues which may be disrupting a normal life sex life.

As people age, individuals often begin to lose the urge for sex. While this is the case, it is extremely normal. For, the subsequent decline in hormone levels changes circulatory and neurological functioning. As such, sex therapy can often help these individuals through a combination of emotional and physical counseling along with some suggestions with regards as to how to regain interest in sex.
