After Addictions Counselling Winnipeg Addicts Can Start A New Future

By Patty Goff

Substance dependency must count as one of the most horrible characteristics of modern society. Dependency knows no social class, country, race or gender. Millions of people think that they simply cannot cope if they do not get regular supplies of their preferred fix. It is not only illegal drugs and alcohol that can cause dependency. There is wide variety of substances that are habit forming. For expert addictions counselling Winnipeg families simply need to pick up the phone.

A large number of people struggling with dependency issues will deny the fact that they are sufferers. This is especially the case with people that have become dependent upon ordinary substances that are freely available over the counter. People that use excessive amounts of aspirin, cough medicine and others convince themselves that they need it and that they are suffering from a condition such as chronic headaches that demand medication.

Those that are dependent upon drugs and alcohol almost always descend into addiction slowly and gradually. They keep telling themselves that they do not need the substance but that they deserve some relaxation from time to time. They commonly refuse to admit that they have reached a point where they are no longer in control of the situation. They do not even realize that they are harming themselves.

One of the saddest things about dependency is that the addict often harms and hurts those around them. They disappoint their employers, abuse their loved ones and they simply do not care because they consider their urgent needs as their utmost top priority. Addicts will often resort to theft, lies and crime in order to obtain the money that they need to feed their addiction.

Many families that want to intervene when they become aware that a loved one is addicted. They struggle with the fact that therapy will only be beneficial if the person concerned admits that he has a problem and that he wants help. Forcing anyone into therapy is counter productive. The first and most important step is therefore to get the affected person to the point where he admits his problem.

Loved ones and employers must make it clear to patients that they have no need to feel ashamed of needing help. In fact, admitting the need for professional help is a sign of strength and resolve. Of course, once an addict starts rehabilitation he needs the love and support of his family and his employer needs to make it clear that he will be welcomed back with open arms.

When looking for help it is important to choose a counselor that specializes in helping people with dependency problems. Therapy often takes a long time and progress is up to the patient, not the counselor. No counselor worth his salt will make promises in this regard. It is often beneficial if the family of the addict is involved in the therapy.

Dependency is a disease that affects not only the addict but also everybody around him. It can lead to socially unacceptable behavior and in many cases addicts develop serious personality disorders. Help is available, however, but only once the addict recognizes that he has a problem and that he cannot solve that problem alone.
