North Carolina Free List On Divorce Records

By Ben Kingsley

Divorce records in North Carolina are considered as an open document. This means that the residents of North Carolina can easily request copies of a divorce record if they find it necessary.

When a couple decides to separate because of irresolvable conflict, an official document has to be generated to make it legal. After the divorce, the couple needs to update their status in the government and one of the documents that have to be presented is the divorce certificate. Without it, transactions related to the separation of the couple may not be processed. Such document is also needed if one of the divorcees would apply for remarriage. This is also one of the documents being checked when conducting a background check on the marital status of an individual. This is conducted by people who wish to make sure that the one's they are dating is unattached or legally separated.

A divorce certificate not only contains information about the divorce of a couple, marriage details can also be found such as the date and the place where they got married. Details of the separation are the highlight of the document. The date and the place where the couple filed their divorce are indicated on the file. The public document would only contain the basics of the separation. The reason why the couple filed divorce cannot be found on a public file. The property and asset division is also kept confidential to respect the privacy of the couple.

The state of North Carolina has records of separation since the year 1958. A processing fee of $24 has to be paid in order to proceed with the retrieval of the document. One has to fill out a request form with the basic information of the document that is being requested. It is also important that the one who filed the request indicate their contact details on the request form since it would be used to verify the relationship of the requesting individual to the divorcee. The document can only be released to the divorcees and their immediate relatives only.

The public records of North Carolina are archived at the Vital Records Section of the state. One can go to the office to file the request for a copy of a divorce certificate. If the requested file is not available at the state office, it may be available at the county clerk office where the separation was filed and registered. A mail request can also be sent to the state office but this is not the fastest method to obtain the document since it may take days to get it.

The development of the Internet has helped hasten the California divorce records search. There are a number of websites that offer to obtain a copy of a divorce certificate. Some even offer it for free while some at a reasonable fee. Many would prefer to pay for the search because of the quality of the results they can get from it.
