Understanding About LGBTQ Counseling NY

By Christine Hamilton

Admittedly, gay, transexuals, bisexuals, and queer people have it hard in a society that has not fully accepted them yet. As in the olden days, these people have been persecuted and shunned by big organizations such as the church or even the government. In this kind of society, it really pays for them to have LGBTQ counseling NY to help them get through.

Although being queer is now more widely accepted as compared to years ago, discrimination is still very rampant in big organizations like the corporate world, government, and even the church. Because of this sort of behavior, it is possible that one would develop mental illnesses over a long period of time which may even lead to suicide. With this, many of them do not live the lives that they want to live.

Now this has been discussed a little bit, then the next thing to think about would be how this type of intervention or therapy can really help people. Now, the very first thing to understand about this type of session is that they are focused on rapport creation. The thing about queer people is that because of this type of persecution, they tend to clam up and hide every negative feeling they have in their minds.

As stated above, the first step of these sessions would be to gain rapport and this is done so that they can start feeling more comfortable about opening up. If they realize that there is actually someone who is willing to listen to them, then they will be able to let out their feelings. It also helps the counselor have a better idea of the struggles of his patient.

Most of these people just need someone who can listen to them and someone who will not judge. With this, counselors will just let them talk and also affirm them from time to time. This is to allow them to let out any tension or feelings that they have been harboring all this time while keeping quiet.

It is through this that the counselors are now able to bring up some solutions for self improvement and positive feelings. This is one of the more delicate parts of the process wherein the counselor will try to change the mindset of these people. So no matter what negative mindsets one may have, it can change.

Now, while most counselors work alone, there are some that have to work together with psychologists to further diagnose if their patients have existing mental conditions. Counselors cannot be able to diagnose if the patient would have something like depression or anxiety. With some psychological testing and the help of a good psychologist, the counselor can further understand the mental health of the patient.

With all of the efforts that the counselors are giving to people who belong in the LGBTQ group, they can be more confident and happier. Discrimination and ostracizing is something that can really hurt a person. Queer people are also people and they also deserve to be accepted by society even if society thinks they are different so that they will not have to go through any sort of suffering.
