How To Design Custom Engagement Jewelry In NYC

By Letitia Connell

There are many ways to tell someone just how much you love them, and arguably the biggest one is to marry them. Most traditional marriages include some kind of engagement ring, and eventually a wedding band on the day of the ceremony. You could buy a mass market set of bands, or design your own. Making your own custom engagement rings in NYC lets you get a unique set that you will always be able to treasure.

If you decide to go the custom route, there are two ways to do it. You can sit down and try to make a rough sketch of what you had in mind. Even the roughest of sketches can be translated into a ring, especially if your chosen jeweler makes customized pieces all the time. If you only have an idea, they can fill in the blanks and collaborate with you on the final look.

Another route to go is to make the ring yourself, using your own two hands. Of course, most people don't have the equipment or experience, but you can sign up for classes, if available. This is a big commitment of time, since it will likely take several sessions to learn and do the actual crafting. You can always just design the ring though, and leave it to the jeweler to make.

The type of metal you use to make the band is very important, since your future betrothed will be wearing the ring each and every day. Go with what she generally wears or likes, as this is usually a safe bet. Some women like the classy and understated look of sterling silver or white gold, while others may prefer the more traditional yellow gold. If you want to think out of the box, consider titanium or even rose gold. Of course, you can always go luxurious and choose to make the band and settings out of platinum.

When people look at your intended engagement ring, the first thing they are going to look at is the stone, so you should choose it wisely. You can never go wrong with a nice white diamond, as this is classic and timeless in look. But if she loves things that are a little different, considering going with a colored diamond, like black or pink. Then there are emeralds and rubies among other precious stones.

The thickness of the wedding band is another decision you will have to make. Remember, bridges tend to wear engagement rings with a matching band, so don't go too thick or it may be uncomfortable to wear. You'll also need to know her band size.

Keep the wedding ring in mind when drawing up plans for the engagement one. Also keep in mind that the groom's ring usually matches, so think about the size and thickness of that band as well, and whether you want to embellish it with stones or not.

The final touch, if you want it, is to get the ring inscribed. There are many things you can inscribe for the final special touch. A simple message, initials and even birth dates are all fair game when it comes to inscriptions, which are generally done inside the ring.
